My wife just bought a Gateway Computer with Windows 8 installed on it.

I haven't opened the box yet because our screen reader requires us to purchase an upgrade for Windows 8 and 8.1 compatibility they tell us.

Its just the computer, we didn't have the money to get her a touch screen.
We don't really have any desire at this point to run Windows 8, but its preinstalled on her new computer.

Since I have no experience with Windows 8 at all.

1) Whats the difference between Windows 8 and Windows 8.1? Is that just a forced upgrade? or are they for 2 different platforms?

2) Since its a Gateway Computer that came with WIndows 8, could we downgrade to Windows 7 if we had to?

I don't know what model it is, I just know its a Gateway SX series. Its probably the thinnest desktop Computer I've ever seen. I didn't think it had a CD drive at first but my wife said at best buy when we was looking at it the DVD's go in sideways. I thought wow that was different. so I don't know, but best buy had it on sale for $259 I'm so jealous.
I guess my main concern about her Running Windows 8, is she's a school teacher and soon to be a student going back for her masters in early childhood development, and she needs Microsoft Office (word, excel, powerpoint) to do her school stuff. We don't really have Microsoft office other then 2007 I purchased when I was in college
Ok just looked it up she has the

only way I could tell was the box says it has a E1-2500 processor
and that was the only model with an E1-2500 processor listed
