Maybe someone here has an idea how to straighten out this virtual mess.
I have a home built electric car conversion - http://ekarmann.com if you're interested - where the controller has a serial port so you can configure the gizmo. The maker provides a Windows app for talking over the serial port to the controller, to configure the controller. It's not a typical ASCII text protocol, so you can't just punt and run terminal software, it needs to be this application.
I've tried with my MacBook Pro w/ Wine to use the software, and also my Chromebook w/ Crouton w/ Wine to use the software. In neither case could I get the software to talk to the controller.
If you don't know - Crouton is a package for Chromebooks where, if you put the Chromebook in Developer mode, once you install Crouton you can install regular Linux. I have Ubuntu 13.10 (saucy) installed on my Chromebook, hence the Wine is whatever Ubuntu provides.
Yes, it's several layers of virtualization going on. I'm doing my best to avoid Windows, and have been able to avoid touching Windows for many years.
I did install PuTTY on the same setup (Chromebook w/ Crouton w/ Wine) and also failed to get any communication with the controller.
